Cari Jiang and Harry are pursuing a dream, to see the world from the seat of a bicycle. Well, to be accurate, it’s Cari’s dream, he does the work and Harry is in a basket, not the seat. Because Harry is a dog, probably the best-traveled dog in modern times.

Nine years ago, they pedalled 25,000 km from China to Europe, covering 23 countries and territories. The second leg, completed this year, took them from Los Angeles to the southern-most city in the world, Ushuaia, in Argentina.

This summer, they visited Haida Gwaii. “Very natural, peaceful and nice,” is Cari’s reaction. “People is nice too.” Some of the nicest, in fact, were a group of young Christians that Cari and Harry met in Daajing Giis, who sang “Amazing Grace” for them. As Cari tells it: “I said I went to church for the first time because of (that) song, so they sang (it), and it suddenly reminded me of that afternoon in Trabzon, Turkey, nine years ago (when) we also met a group of young missionaries. The world is so wonderful.” You can find that happy moment on Cari’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/cari.jiang.

Cari, 36, wanted to see Haida Gwaii because he has a friend who lives here. The friend told him about the Haida culture, and the heart-stopping scenery, and so man, dog and bike journeyed north to see for themselves. They climbed Sleeping Beauty, and they left sets of six footprints on the beaches.

The next challenge in their round-theworld odyssey is the African continent. “I love the forests and the lakes, and all creatures of this world,” Cari says on his website. “I want to know them, listen to their voices. If you get close enough, you can hear their voices and know their story. That is why I choose to be on the road.”

Along the way, they plan to stop at animal shelters. Cari wants to draw attention to homeless animals because that’s how he met Harry 13 years ago. They are determined to stay together for every step of their global journey. For that reason, they won’t be touring Australia, because on that continent, visiting pets have to be quarantined.

“The most precious gift,” says Cari, “is not how many beautiful things you see, but who you see it with.”
