Haida Gwaii is home to so many accomplished and amateur musical performers, and for the past year or so we have been introducing you to many of them. For this edition of the All Things Music column, let us introduce you to some of the folks who regularly contribute to the Haida Gwaii Coffeehouse open mic. We asked them to describe their music, what instruments they play, how long they've been musical, how they learned, how often they practice, and more. Here is what they had to say.

Karen Dean

This lovely woman moved to Haida Gwaii in 2018 after a lifetime of working for social justice. She was a full time trade union rep, advocate, and was active in women’s, peace, and environmental issues. “I am most comfortable trying to find small ways to contribute to a better world, and music is one way to communicate that also helps to build community.”

Karen describes herself as a folksinger who plays guitar and a little keyboard. “I gravitate to folk or folk-country because the songs of this genre usually have something to say about the human condition, about what is happening around us. They pick us up, sometimes toss us around, and always give us something to think about. These songs connect us, make us realize what we all have in common.” She also writes her own tunes and has been trying to get back to that recently.

Karen loves singing with others, finding harmonies, and playing with musicians who are better than she is. Music has always been in her life. She started learning piano at age five and guitar at age twelve. “I mostly learned to play music from other people, watching them play and picking up chords and styles along the way.” Although she didn’t retain much from her piano lessons as a kid, she still can read music as a result. Her music practice is truly a sporadic thing. “If I have a reason to practice, I do, and strangely the pandemic has meant doing music less and less as I love it most when I know I can do it with other people.” Karen is always interested in finding more ways to sing and play with others, so feel free to reach out to her if you want to be musical! Steve Ramsbottom

“I’m known as Steve Prine ‘cause I love covers of John Prine,” says Steve, who plays the eight and twelve string acoustic guitars and dabbles on the ukulele. “I started playing around 2005 when my ex-wife bought me a guitar for Christmas”. Although he only knows about seven chords, he likes to play along with other musicians and normally practices `regularly. But like Karen, Steve hasn’t practiced so much in the past two years because he also prefers playing with other folks. “I’ll play with anyone who is interested – jam nights and such. One of the reasons I opened the music store [see sidebar] is to be able to jam in the store; it’ll change the atmosphere of the place!” I think he is correct when he says, “Everyone is yearning for more music!” Musical connection contact: go see Steve at The Music shop located in Haida Gwaii Design and Signs, at Crab Apple Creek, or call/text 778-230-9871.

Terry Haymond

Tery has been a resident of Haida Gwaii since 1971, and living on boats for over 25 years! He describes himself as a singer-songwriter whose instruments of choice are the guitar and the mandolin. He loves reggae, rock ‘n roll, Celtic, jazz and blues, and is inspired by Leonard Cohen, Peter Paul and Mary, and Gordon Lightfoot.

Tery grew up in a musical family and started playing music early on. He was in the church choir and played the accordion from ages nine to 13, picked up the guitar at 17, and has been playing the mandolin since the late nineties. He took creative writing classes in school, which helped him write his first Prince George bar song. “This song came out in one sitting, the chord pattern came from the eight bar blues chord pattern, and it talks about where you want to go and reaching out to make it happen.” His song is called Do it From Where You Are and he’s played it a few times at the Daajing Giids Queen Charlotte Coffeehouse.

Practice is really sporadic for Tery as well because, “When you play by yourself it gets kinda boring. I don’t look at it as practice, I just play tunes! I only call it practice if I’m learning a new song.” Tery is very open to playing with other folks and says, “Just reach and out and call me if you want to jam!” Musical connection contact: 250-637-1879 or on FB/Tery Haymond.
