Community-based learning on Haida Gwaii
Raising a child on Haida Gwaii has its pros and cons.Unfortunately, staples of a Canadian childhood, such aspee wee hockey and Tim Horton’s hot chocolate, are nota shared experience for the born and raised Haida Gwaiikids. FORTUNATELY, put in place of these are things likegrowing up with a forest as your backyard, having yourversion of an I Spy book be the endless beaches, and gettingto be a part of a small, but tightly knit and supportivecommunity.

The clan tournament was only the beginning
The weekend of January 19th to the 21st was the 17th annual Clan Tournament in Skidegate, a weekend of basketball in which Haida clans from all over the island form teams and compete. The tournament was jam-packed with thrilling action with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals all coming down to just a few points. The finals between Skedans-Yahgujaanaas and Ts’aahl had the audience on the edge of its seat until the last moments of the game, which saw Skedans-Yahgujaanaas pulling ahead to beat Ts’aahl. The atmosphere in the George Brown Recreation Centre (GBRC) was ecstatic, and a thrill to be a part of.

Be it due to poor lifestyle choices, modernday stress, or the towering needs of babyboomer seniors, today’s healthcare system isunder an immense amount of pressure. Withthis in mind, it is good to know that there’s somegood news worth sharing. News that can serve tohelp each and every one of us in standing up forand communicating what we truly need to care forourselves and each other.
