Here at HG Trader, any and all feedback is greatly valued. (We cannot say this enough!)

To all of you who have taken the time out of your busy schedules to share your comments and suggestions with us, thanks a bunch!  Truly, this site is all about and for you!



Here is a list of common questions thus far:

What ads are free to post?  What are the paid ads?

Free Self-Administered* Classified Ad Postings (both online and in the monthly printed magazine) are available to individuals looking to buy, sell or trade their privately owned personal articles, excluding privately owned real estate and/or rentals.

You can upload up to three picture with your ads and the first of these pictures will appear with your ad in the HG Trader monthly magazine.

HG Trader also offers free postings for:

  • Youth Go Getters-anyone under the age of 18 who would like to advertise their entrepreneurial services such as baby-sitting, lawn mowing or odd jobs, etc.
  • Micro enterprises that have yet to register their businesses.  Before this free business advertising is approved, please provide us the details of your unique situation.
  • Some free ads are offered to groups that are not registered as a not for profit organization.  Again, contact us before you post your ad to confirm if your ad will be free.

Paid Self Administered* Ad Postings apply to any classified ad posted by a for profit or not for profit business.  In addition, the Real Estate and Rental postings are paid ads as well.

Our rates are:

  • $20 per month
  • $57 for three (save 5% of monthly rate)
  • $108 for six (save 10%) or
  • $204 for a year (save 15%)
  • GST is extra for all bookings.
One exception:  real estate rental ad is only $10 per month plus GST.

Annual Not For Profit classified ad program (ANFP): if your organization is a registered not for profit, we have designed a special, highly affordable program to help you spread your word.  You can enter one, 100 word* classified ad in whatever category you desire and keep it running year round for only $120 per year plus GST.  Entering, updating and renewing it monthly (even though you have booked it for a year, a monthly renewal is necessary to keep the site accurate and fresh) is your responsibility.  The ad should tell folks who you are, what products and services you offer and how to get a hold of you.  The online version of your ad can have up to three pictures - the first picture is recommended to be your company logo.  Your first uploaded picture will also appear beside your ad in the HG Trader monthly magazine.  Deadline for content for each magazine issue is the 15th of the previous month at noon.

*If you wish to post an ad with more than 100 words, please call us for pricing.  Magazine content deadline is on the 25th of each month at noon.

*If you wish us to enter any of your classified ads, we are happy to do so.  We charge a one time posting fee of $10 per ad plus GST.

What payment options do you have?

The payment methods we accept are:

  • cash
  • cheque (made out to: Haida Gwaii Trader and mail to: PO Box 222, Port Clements, BC V0T 1R0)
  • credit card (we send you a Pay Pal invoice)
  • e-transfers (bank fee applies)
  • NSCU direct deposit, contact us for more info.
  • Drop by our office:  please call ahead at 250-557-2088 to be sure we are in (sometimes we are on the road).  We are located at 35 Cedar Ave. West, Port Clements. (2nd level of the PC Firehall)

How do I post a classified ad on HG Trader?

Posting ads on HG Trader only takes a few moments and we have worked hard to design user friendly, self-administered systems so as to enable you to post/edit or delete a wide variety of ads any time, any day!

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!
  1. Go to the HG Trader website: www.haidagwaiitrader.com , hover your mouse over the “Classifieds” tab and then click on “Post/Edit Classified”. The Login page will then open up. Click “Register” to sign up for your free HG Trader classified membership. Fill in your name, user name, email and password and then the email that you entered will be sent an activation email (if you do not see it in your Inbox right away, check your Junk folder as well....sometimes they go there, depending on your filters). In the body of the activation email, you will find a link that when you click on this link, your membership will then be ready to go.
  2. You can now login with your user name and password. Then, simply choose the category for the type of classified ad you wish to post and fill in your ad’s details. It is highly recommended that you include at least one picture for your ad, as a picture truly helps to make your ad stand out. You can download up to three pictures online and the first of these will appear by your ad (if it is on the site on the 25th of the month before noon) in the monthly HG Trader magazine. If your pictures are large sized files, it may take a bit for the system to upload them. There is a resize tutorial link right above where you upload pictures....if your pictures are more than 3MB, they will not load. You will have to resize them smaller.
  3. Ad renewals: three weeks after your ad or ads have posted, the email that is on the ad will be sent an “Ad Renewal Notification”. If you wish your ad to run more than 30 days, simply click the renewal link that appears in this email and voila…your ad will run for another month. Feel free to keep your ads running as long as you wish! At any time you wish to edit or delete any of your ads, simply login and then click on “My Ads” and you are good to go to update your ads as you wish.

Why did I not receive my membership verification email?

First, check your Junk or Spam mailbox to ensure your HG Trader membership verification email did not get filtered to this location.  If you find it there, mark the email as safe and then all HG Trader communications will correctly go to your Inbox.

Or, if you do not see your membership verification email in your junk or spam box, then it is possible that there was an error in how you entered your email address during the registration process.  If this is the case, simply register again and if you then receive your verification email...you will know this was the case.

Lastly, if upon registering again, you receive a message that says:

"This username/password already in use. Please try another, "

This means you did not make an error in entering your email address and sometimes communication blips out in 'online never land' will require us to manually activate your account.  Just give us a ring @ 250-557-2088 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and be sure to include your phone number and we will activate your account on our end.

I am trying to reset my password but it is not working, what do I do?

When you click on the "Lost Password?" link, you will be sent an email with a 'token' that you must copy and paste.  Please be sure you only click the numbers and letters of the token, not the space or period after this token. Otherwise, the system will deem the token invalid.

Please note:  the User Name and Passwords can only be entererd as numbers and letters....the system does not recognize special characters such as: #%&*^(), etc.  If your User Name or Password has any special characters, it will not accept them.

Another option is to email us your desired password and we can add it to your account on our end. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. How do I update or delete my classified ad or ads once I have posted them?

Update or Deleting ads:  Once you have logged in, simply click on 'My Ads' link and then all of the ads you have posted will appear in the center screen.  If you wish to update your ad, click on "Update" and the ad posting screen will appear.  You can also delete and/or change your pictures too.  Once you have made your updates, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and press 'Save' once.  Be patient, our Haida Gwaii internet connections can often take a bit.....once it is done, a message will appear on the screen telling you so.

To delete an ad, follow the same process above to update your ad, only you will click on the 'Delete' option and it will ask you if you are sure, press 'Yes' and voila...your ad will be no more.

How do I renew my ad or ads?

Three weeks after you post your ad, the email address that you enter in your ad (if it is different from your email address registered to your HG Trader membership, please keep this in mind) will receive this ad's renewal notification.  Simply click on the provided link and your ad will run for another month.  If this link is not clicked, your ad will automatically expire 7 days after receiving this email.  If you do not wish to post an email address in your ad, or, if you did not receive your ad renewal notification to the email you did enter in your ad (please keep an eye on your junk/spam mail too), please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to email us or call us @ 250-557-2088 so that we can help you.  This automatic ad renewal system has been chosen so as to keep Haida Gwaii Trader's classified ads current and accurate.

How do I post an event on the HGT Community Calendar?

It is free for you to post a not for profit event on the HGT Community Calendar!  If the event is a business event, the fee is $20 plus GST per event.

Simply log on to www.haidagwaiitrader.com and click on the “Calendar” tab.  Click on “Submit an Event” and then, before you can post your event, you must fill in a quick membership...click “Sign Up” and fill in your details.  You will then be able to login with your User Name and Password and you are good to go to post your event.

You can post one main picture and also upload one other file too (which will appear as a link at the bottom of the posting)....this can be a poster or another picture if you like. 

The Community Calendar has some wonderful features and benefits such as:

  • The event posting system is self-administered.  This means that you can post and edit your events, any time, any day according to your schedule.
  • If you have a recurring event, you only have to post it once with our recurring event feature.
  • Events can be posted years in advance-this will hopefully help everyone avoid booking events on the same day.
  • The event posting form enables you to list full event contact information including email and/or website addresses.
  • Your event posting can display one picture and one document link (flyer/poster, etc)
  • Your picture and the first 25 words of your event description will also print in the monthly HG Trader magazine under the new Community Calendar section. Cutoff for printed content is the 25th of every month.
  • At any time, you can edit or delete your event ads online...and it only takes a couple of minutes to do so.
  • When viewing the calendar, events can be sorted by city or event category and events can be viewed far into the future.  This will help folks in avoiding double booking of event dates.
  • If you wish us to post your events (not for profit or for profit) we charge $10 per ad plus GST

How do I post a Real Estate or Rentals ad?

Because the real estate and rentals system is a separate content management system than the classified section, in order to post an ad in this sections, you must first create a free membership. (If you already have a membership to post ads in the classified section, you can use the same user name and password to set up your membership in these areas, so long as the password is a minimum of six characters.)

To create your real estate and rentals free membership, click on the “Real Estate & Rentals” tab, then click on “Post/Edit Real Estate Ad”.  Then, click “Register New Account,” fill in the membership form, click “Create Account” and you are good to login and post your ad. (You will not be sent an activation email with this process....as soon as you submit your membership info, you are good to login)

Real estate ads are $20 per month/$57 for three/$108 for six and $204 for a year plus GST.  Real Estate rental ads are $10 per month plus GST.

Both real estate and rental ads can be paid with your credit card on the HG Trader website...making it easy and quick to publish your ad. If a person would rather pay via cheque or e-transfer, the ad will be published when the payment has cleared.

Please note, the content deadline for the HG Trader monthly magazine is the 25th of each month at noon.

6. Your web site appears all wierd....out of place, what is wrong?

Sometimes if you are viewing the internet with a later version of your browser, say Internet Explorer or Firefox, they do not read the site as they would when viewed with the latest version.  If you search for the latest version and download it and you will find that many of your browser features will be easier and smoother to use and HG Trader should then be back in order. Our favorite brower is Google Chrome.

Also, if your computer is quite old, your graphics card may not read HGT properly.

7. Where can one purchase your monthly HG Trader magazine?

Please note: as HG Trader classified are self-administered, it is up to you to keep your ads accurate and up to date.  When editing the current issue of the HG Trader Magazine, if there are ads that are not current (and we will even try and reach you if we have time) we unfortunately will have to omit ads from being published in the monthly magazine. Cry

The full color, Haida Gwaii Trader monthly magazine is on the shelves by the end of the first week of every month.  It costs $5 (including GST) and can be found at various retail locations around Haida Gwaii and one in Prince Rupert.

All classifieds, calendar events, real estate for sale and for rent ads that are on the HGT website on the 25th of the month (at noon) will appear in the next month's issue. You can, of course, update or delete your online ads any time, any day.

Annual Subscriptions: SAVE 20% off retail pricing! For only $48 plus GST ($50.40 total) we will deliver 12 issues of the HGT monthly magazine right to your post box!  Just call in, email or mail us your name, mailing address, phone number and email and we will get you going with our next issue!  We also sell the subscriptions 6 months at a time as well for $27 plus GST ($28.35 total).

8. I am trying to upload new photos for my classified ad and it is upside down/sideways or, the updated version is not appearing...the original one keeps showing up.  What do I do?

Sometimes, with slower internet connections, pictures take a bit to upload, so please do be patient.  Also:

  • The system will only accept pictures up to 3MB, if your picture is larger, please re-size it before you upload it.
  • Please be sure your picture is right side up when you upload it.  If it appears sideways or upside down, your original must be corrected...so go back to where you found your picture and turn it right side up, save it under a different name and then replace the one that is wonky.
  • Before updating your ad's picture or pictures, clear your browsing history...sometimes, for some reason, original pictures can be cached. Please note:  when you clear your browser history, cached passwords for other websites (those passwords that appear without your having clicked on their "Remember Me" boxes) will be deleted.
  • When removing the picture or pictures you no longer wish to display, click on the 'Delete' box by each picture and then press 'Save', one picture at a time.  Then, go back into your ad and upload your new pictures.  Be sure that the file name on your new picture or pictures is different than the ones you are replacing them with.  Please press the 'Save' button only once.  Sometimes slower internet connections take a bit to upload your pictures.  A message will appear when your ad has been successfully saved.
  • Last but not least, you can also email us the picture or pictures and we will upload them on your behalf.
